Travel Bureau - Hotel Spotlight on Ritz Cartlon Abama, Tenerife

Hotel Focus: Ritz-Carlton Abama, Tenerife

Friday 23 February 2018

For us Brits, stepping off the plane in Tenerife and taking in the views as we travel to our hotel can be a touch disconcerting. Here, we’re so used to seeing the green of fields (even pale with frost or darkened by mud) that we only become aware of how accustomed our eyes are to that ever-present hue when confronted by its absence. To us, then, Tenerife’s landscape can give off a sense of otherworldliness; stark, arid stretches punctuated by stunted cacti and squat, dusty-looking buildings all overlooked by the imposing Teide, almost give one the sense of having wandered into a dystopian futurescape.

However, just as every action has an equal and opposite reaction, in every dystopia there is the promise of utopia and if, when you step off that plane, you’re lucky enough to be heading to the Ritz-Carlton Abama, you can rest assured, as the unusual and unwelcoming lands slip past, that you’re on your way to the closest thing we may have to heaven on earth.

On Tenerife’s west coast, looking out across the ocean towards the island of La Gomera, this stunning 5* resort will transport you to your very own oasis. Built on a 400-acre banana plantation, amid carefully tended tropical gardens, with towering palms and an immaculately maintained champion golf course, there’s more than enough vibrant verdure here to satisfy even the most ardent of chlorophiles. Even the Moorish-inspired hotel defies the island’s muted tones with its high pink-painted walls adding a splash of sunset colour against the sky.

Tenerife is a popular winter sun destination as temperatures can sore in our summer months but the Ritz-Carlton Abama’s position right by the Atlantic makes it a great resort in any season. Fresh sea breezes keep guests cool as they make their way around the resort’s 18-hole golf course, sip cocktails by one of the many pools or sunbathe on the hotel’s private beach. There is also year-round whale and dolphin watching to be enjoyed and, as Tenerife if famous for its dazzling night skies, the spectacular stargazing is not to be missed.

Another thing we all love is good food and the Ritz-Carlton Abama has it in abundance. Serious foodies need look no further than the resort’s signature restaurant, M.B, helmed by two-Michelin-starred chef Martín Bersategui, for a truly exceptional dining experience. While M.B offers a taste of authentic Basque dishes, Kabuki (which also holds a Michelin star) gives guests the chance to try Chef Ricardo Sanz’s distinctive Japanese cuisine.

The Ritz-Carlton Abama offer fantastic options for both couples and families with dedicated adults-only and child-friendly spaces throughout the resort.
