You needn’t travel half way across the world to find a dream destination when there are idyllic honeymoon hide-aways to be had much closer to home.
The Caribbean or the Maldives certainly have their attractions for newlyweds, but Europe’s old world charms can be equally enticing.
Our personal travel expert and honeymoon specialist, Joanne, thinks that a twin-centre honeymoon to Croatia and Montenegro could be just the ticket!
If you’re short on time you can get the best from these neighbouring destinations in seven days but Joanne recommends a week in each to relax and explore all that’s on offer.
With direct flights from Newcastle to Dubrovnik taking only two-hours, this historic walled city by the sea is the perfect place to start your blissful honeymoon.
Honeymooning couples will love the intimate Villa Orsula, an extremely romantic hotel which boasts stunning views of both the old town and the mesmerizing Adriatic.
To fully appreciate the stunning city of Dubrovnik, Joanne recommends a walk around the historic city walls.
You could also take a boat trip out to one of the islands around Dubrovnik. Lokrum, just fifteen minutes from the shore, is a wonderful place to get lost for a day among the lush plantlife, hidden coves and shady walkways of the island’s ancient monastery.
One thing every visitor to Dubrovnik should do is try some fantastic Croatian cuisine and of course this vibrant city, known for its sophisticated nightlife, is not short of brilliant restaurants.
For a true taste of traditional Croatian hospitality head to Proto. Situated in the heart of the old town, this restaurant not only serves the most delicious Dalmatian seafood but is also renowned for its wonderful service.
For a fine-dining experience with a truly spectacular setting try Nautika, with its terraces overlooking the sea and Dubrovnik’s ancient fortresses it’s no wonder that Condé Nast voted this one of the most romantic restaurants in the world.
For the ultimate indulgence, Joanne recommends a stay at the Aman Sveti Stefan. From Dubrovnik it’s only a 2 ½ -hour drive to this private island in Montenegro and on the way you’ll see more of the incredible mountains and breath-taking coastal scenery that these countries are famous for.
This exclusive resort is perfect for honeymooners with each hotel room housed in the old houses of this 15th century village. If you really want to treat yourselves, opt for the Sveti Stefan suite where you’ll have your own pool on a tranquil terrace with breathtaking sea views.
A unique and historic destination, where you can wander down cobbled lanes or relax in handsome courtyards overlooking the sea, Sveti Stefan is also loved for its exceptional food and fantastic spa.
Anybody travelling in this region should sample the superb (and inexpensive) wine available in both Croatia and Montenegro: the concierge service at Sveti Stefan can even arrange a tour of a local vineyard.
Another excursion not to be missed in Montenegro is a trip to the beautiful town of Kotor where you can take a short trip to the two islets that lie in the stunning bay.
