Just Back From... The Caribbean

Thursday 23 October 2014

The Caribbean still remains a popular honeymoon destination and our honeymoon expert Joanne is just back from a fact finding mission around some of its best honeymoon islands and resorts…

Spotlight on Antigua

When….with all those beaches to try you want to go when the sun is shining which is generally between November and April. Sailing is big on the island and the annual regatta week is usually early May and resorts get busy, but it’s a great atmosphere and lots of fun if you’re into sailing.

Why… with direct flights from Gatwick with BA and Virgin it’s really easy to get to for one of the smaller Caribbean islands. It’s also a good spot to start a multi-centre island hopping trip, taking in St. Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla.

Must do…. join the Caribbean party atmosphere at Shirley Heights. This old lookout point from the island’s British colonial days comes alive every Sunday night with street food, steel bands and reggae music. Sit and gaze out over the old English harbour below and watch the sunset over the Caribbean.

Joanne recommends….

If you’re looking for a boutique style vibe instead of full on celebrity glitz, but still want the benefits of fantastic personal service and all-inclusive facilities, then look no further than the stunning Hermitage Bay Hotel. It was recently voted the best hotel for romance in Trip Advisors Travellers Choice Awards and it doesn’t disappoint.

  • Check into one of the Hillside Pool Suites which comes with its own private plunge pool and some of the best views in the Caribbean.
  • It’s great for water sports so if you’re a beach bunny you can take advantage of the all-inclusive activities, from private guided snorkelling to windsurfing. The hotel can also arrange private speed boat trips to whisk you around the 365 beaches the island boasts – one for every day of the year!
  • It’s an idyllic spot for a low key bespoke wedding on the beach with your nearest and dearest. The hotel only allow one wedding a week so you won’t feel like you’re on a ‘getting hitched’ conveyor belt.

Spotlight on St. Lucia

When… the dry season is between December and June but expect rain, high winds (and the odd hurricane!!) if you travel between July and November. The island’s 2 week jazz and arts festival in May often attracts top performers and is worth checking out.

Why… The summer rainfall may be a bore but it makes St. Lucia one of the greenest islands in the Caribbean. It’s packed with natural wonders and its distinctive volcanic Pitons are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It even has a drive-in volcano, where you can relax in hot mud baths.

Must do… visit the original Hotel Chocolat. The luxurious chocolate company has opened up its cocoa plantation and offers a Tree to Bar Experience, an exclusive opportunity to discover chocolate as you never have before. Finish your tour by enjoying lunch in the restaurant, where ever dish has a chocolate-y infusion.

Joanne recommends….

If you fancy a traditional Caribbean all inclusive experience with an emphasis on spa and rejuvenation, after a hectic year of wedding planning, The Body Holiday Resort is the perfect honeymoon choice.

  • The resort offers a daily spa treatment per person as standard, included in the package price. Or why not let our experts liaise with the hotel to develop your very own rejuvenation programme.
  • It’s not just about spa and wellness. The resort also has a lively entertainment programme with lots going on both day and night. Check out the daily blackboard on the beach for the full daily run down. Don’t worry you can do as little or as much as you want and there is always a quite spot to escape to.
  • The Tao Restaurant is fabulous! It’s a fusion of east and west and is regularly voted one of Conde Nast Traveller magazine’s ’60 Hottest Tables’ and the lobster is to die for!

Spotlight on Petit St. Vincent

When…. the winter months are the best time to visit (December to April) but go between Easter and June and you’ll see the island in glorious full bloom.

Why….the ultimate private island hideaway. Petit St. Vincent is part of the Grenadine Islands and lies about 40 miles south of St. Vincent. The entire island operates as a luxury resort and can be accessed from either St. Lucia or Barbados by a short flight to Union Island and then a private boat transfer – a lovely way to arrive!

Must do…. Taking a boat trip to the Tabago Cays Marine Park to swim with or just watch the giant sea turtles is a truly magical experience. The abundant marine wildlife in this shallow sandy bottomed lagoon makes it one of the best places to snorkel or dive in the whole of the Caribbean.

Joanne Recommends….

The private island of Petit St. Vincent offers honeymooners complete privacy and a real desert island experience. There are just 22 rustic Caribbean stone cottages scattered across the island, all with stunning decks and outside dining where meals can be served at no extra cost. There is a deliberate absence of connectivity in the cottages – with no TV, internet or mobile signal, so you really can get away from it all.

  • The one bedroom cottages are perfect for honeymooners. Choose from a beach front, elevated or central (near the main hotel amenities) location. Study the resort map with our experts and cherry pick your perfect spot.
  • Enjoy the islands unique flag communication system! Yellow for service (pick up the service request forms at reception, jot down your request back at the cottage and pop it into the bamboo tube connected to the yellow flag and hoist - hay presto your wish is their command! Hoist the red flag and you’ll not be disturbed, guaranteeing complete privacy!
  • The weekly movie evening is a real highlight. The huge inflatable screen erected on the beach to show old movies in the open air, with the sea lapping behind you, accompanied with fine wine and popcorn, is an unforgettable experience.
  • Using St. Lucia or Barbados as a gateway to this idyllic island means it’s a great choice to combine with either of these livelier islands for a twin centre honeymoon.
