Bali, a volcanic island in Indonesia famous for its lush, green landscapes, has become one of the world’s most popular holiday destinations in recent years. With a host of diverse attractions, it’s no wonder holiday-makers are flocking to this exotic location. From tranquil temples and yoga retreats in secluded jungle hideaways to trekking adventures and vibrant hubs of lively nightlife, Bali has something for everyone to enjoy. Find out how to get the best from Bali with tips from our personal travel expert, Angela.
Emirates offer flights to Bali from Newcastle International Airport with a layover in Dubai. Alternatively, you may choose to travel via Singapore and spend a few days exploring this modern city. (Get our tips on how to make the most of your Singapore stopover here.)
Angela recommends a stay of at least 10 nights in Bali to really make the most of everything there is to see and do here. A twin-centre holiday will allow you to explore different areas of the island, such as Seminyak and Ubud. You could even hop over to neighbouring Island, Lombok which lies just off Bali’s east coast.
Viceroy – Ubud
A favourite of honeymooners, the Viceroy creates a luxuriously peaceful atmosphere and gives couples a high degree of privacy. The Viceroy is all about relaxation, each room has its own private pool where guests can relax surrounded by beautiful design and, of course, stunning views.
HIGHLIGHT: Angela absolutely loved the hotel’s blissful spa complete with an incredible infinity pool which looks out across the whole valley.
The Samaya – Seminyak
More family friendly than the Viceroy, this award-winning 5* property has various types of accommodation to suit all parties. The hotel is excellently located on one of Bali’s many beautiful beaches and guests can enjoy a wonderful lagoon-style swimming pool in addition.
HIGHLIGHT: Angela adored the Seminyak’s large and luxurious villas which are equipped with every home comfort you could possibly require.
Puri Santrian - Sanur
Set amid beautiful tropical gardens this family-owned resort is located on the tranquil south-eastern end of the island. The delightful accommodation in traditional low-rise buildings adds to the property’s typically Balinese feel. While families are welcomed, there are adult only areas for those who prefer a quieter time.
HIGHLIGHT: Having breakfast every day (from a fantastic buffet selection) with a beautiful sea view was Angela’s favourite part of staying at Puri Santrian.
Angela’s top tips…
1.Go shopping in Ubud – See the locals making wood carvings and painting eggs and pick up some great souvenirs.
2.See mount Batur from Batur Village – Mount Batur is an active volcano, you can see where the land is still scorched from its last eruption, with an odd tree or patch of green showing through the hardened lava.
3.Visit Ubud Monkey Forest – The sacred monkey forest, with its moss-covered ancient temple is a mystical place, made even more magical by the presence of long-tailed grey monkeys.
4.See some temples – A pura is a Balinese Hindu temple and the island is full of these beautiful structures, definitely a sight not to be missed.
5.Go to Potato Head Beach Club, Seminyak – This is the place to be for chilled nightlife, great food and cocktails in the sunshine, where the beachfront bar is flanked by an infinity pool. There are often fireworks in the evening and it’s a popular place so try to get there before 5pm if you want a seat.
Don’t leave without…
Angela recommends everyone to visit Bali’s paddy fields. Not only are the views phenomenal but it’s also an amazing cultural experience allowing tourists to see a traditional way of life for the local Balinese people.
