Our honeymoon expert Danielle recently returned from ‘La Reunion’, a largely undiscovered paradise in the Indian Ocean. It’s only a short flight from Mauritius and with its diverse and dramatic scenery La Reunion makes for an adventurous honeymoon. There’s a good infrastructure on the island due to its French identity plus great French and Creole food.
La Reunion adds something totally different to an Indian Ocean itinerary and we’re sure adventurous honeymooners will love it.
Best time to travel
July to September are the busiest times for tourists as the temperatures are slightly cooler at around 25 degrees. This is also during whale watching season.
It makes sense to travel to Mauritius first from London which takes around 12 hours, the flight to La Reunion is then only a mere 40mins. You will not have to stay overnight in Mauritius and there is only likely to be a 2 hour wait.
La Reunion has 2 international airports but most visitors will arrive into Roland Garros, approx. six miles east of the main city St-Denis.
Far more than just a beach retreat
The hotels are focused in one area on the west coast around the lovely little villages of St Leu and St Gilles les Bains. Nearby beaches are breathtakingly golden but the real reason for visiting is the feeling of exploration and discovery.
Nearly half of the island is classed as a UNESCO world heritage site. The 3,070 metres high dormant volcano of Piton des Neiges is the islands most dominant feature but it’s not alone – there is also the world’s second most active volcano ‘Piton de la Fournaise’ and the two giants of nature offer great spectacle. See the crater lake and walk on lava flows from previous eruptions, it’s all perfectly safe and the island has continued to grow with the lava spread.
Unsurprisingly, La Reunion is a great destination for hiking and biking and these are popular activities in the circues, either on the more established trails of Salazie and Cilaos or the wilderness of Mafate. 4X4 trips are also a less strenuous way to get around where you can benefit from a knowledgeable driver/guide.
An early morning helicopter ride is an absolute must, with its dramatic topography and landscape that isn’t always accessible, the island is a dream to discover by air. Swoop past canyons and hover by powerful waterfalls. We can book this for you in advance.
The daredevils amongst you may even wish to paraglide, floating down to the lagoon close to IIhoa.
As previously mentioned June to October is Whale watching season (in particular humpback whales) and it’s possible to see the ocean giants from land on most days during this time. It’s not uncommon to see cars just stop so people can watch in awe as a whale comes into view. Boat trips are also an option where you’ll more than likely encounter some friendly dolphins.
Danielle’s Honeymoon Recommendations
5 nights is the perfect amount of time to stay with a 7 night relaxing trip to Mauritius afterwards.
What to do?
Explore! Soak up the dramatic scenery and book as many activities as possible.
Day 1:Arrive at the beautiful boutique retreat of Blue Margouillat and enjoy a nice afternoon by the pool taking in incredible views in an elevated setting. This hotel also has one of the best restaurants in La Reunion – perfect for your first romantic candle lit dinner after travelling.
Day 2:Rise early for a breath-taking helicopter trip over the island then spend the afternoon swimming in a natural lagoon and relaxing in the sun.
Day 3: Spend a full day adventuring to the volcanoes, taking in incredible views and stunning scenery.
Day 4:Be driven up to Cirque de cilaos to see pretty creole houses, followed by shopping in the markets and a glass of wine and meal in a local restaurant. If you still feel energetic afterwards there are numerous hiking trails to explore in the afternoon.
Day 5:After breakfast by the pool, transfer to the airport for your flight to Mauritius for the next part of your once in a lifetime trip. Adding a Mauritius beach extension afterwards complements the Indiana Jones style adventuring!
