A unique archipelago made up of both granite and coral islands, the Seychelles has become an iconic beach destination. Complete with the picture-perfect white sand beaches and dazzling bright waters characteristic of the Indian Ocean, the beautiful islands of the Seychelles are wonderful for both families and honeymooners. Parents and children alike will adore exploring the exotic flora and fauna of the Seychelles and newlyweds will find bliss on pristine beaches. Personal Travel Expert Iain has recently returned from the Seychelles full of top tips to share about this idyllic group of islands.
Emirates offer flights to Mahé, Seychelles from Newcastle with a connection in Dubai. Alternatively, it is also possible to fly via Paris Charles-de-Gaulle airport, which would be ideal for a romantic stopover.
Island hopping around the Seychelles is more than enough for a two-week holiday, however if you wanted to include the Seychelles in a longer trip, good pairings include the Middle East, Mauritius or South Africa.
While the Seychelles has a good climate all year round, it is a great summer destination as the archipelago’s best weather coincides perfectly with our holiday season.
TOP TIP: If you take the 2am flight from Dubai and reserve seats on the left-hand side of the aircraft, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular sunrise on the way to the Seychelles.
Coco de Mer Hotel & Black Parrot Suites, Praslin
Lying on the edge of the Indian Ocean, the Coco de Mer is one of the most popular resorts in the Seychelles. The main hotel is great for families while the Black Parrot Suites, with only 12 junior suites and no children under 14 allowed, provide a more peaceful retreat. The hotel will be closed from 20th November until 1st February for major renovations. The jetty, a great place from which to view the sunset, will be replaced with a spectacular infinity pool.
HIGHLIGHT: Built on 2km of coastline, guests can explore 200 acres of forest with extensive nature trails.
Four Seasons, Mahé
The Four Seasons Resort Seychelles is truly luxury at its best, with all the top-quality facilities, sensational dining and fastidious attention to detail that you would expect from a Four Seasons resort. The hotel’s location could not be more perfect: built into the hillside forest above a beautiful crescent-shaped white beach, which, sheltered from the ocean’s currents, is perfect for swimming and snorkelling. There are also residences available for larger families and groups.
HIGHLIGHT: Every villa faces the ocean and each one has its own private pool!
Constance Ephelia, Mahé
Set on two stunning beaches, this large resort is perfect for families with lots of activities to keep both children and adults entertained. In addition, guests have a choice of five restaurants so even the fussiest of eaters will find something they love. The South Side of the resort is characterised by wonderful tropical gardens while the North beach offers complimentary non-motorised water sports and is ideal for snorkelling.
HIGHLIGHT: Parents in need of a break will love this resort which has a Kids Club for 4-11 year olds, open from 9am to 8pm.
Iain’s top tips…
1.Victoria, the capital of Seychelles on Mahé, is a quaint city with charming colonial architecture. Compact and easy to walk around in a couple of hours, the city’s attractions include the vibrant Sir Selwyn Clarke Market and National Botanical Gardens.
2.On the island of La Digue, a 15-minute ferry ride from Praslin is Anse Source d’Argent, reputed to be the most photographed beach in the world.
3.Also on La Digue is the L’Union Estate which is home to a population of giant tortoises.
4.‘Vallée de Mai’ on Praslin is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s home to 6000 Coco-de-Mer trees and is the only place in the Seychelles where you can find the endangered Black Parrot.
5.Anse-Lazio Beach, also on Praslin, has been voted one of the world’s top ten beaches and it’s not hard to see why: bordered by large granite boulders, the beach’s clear pure waters are wonderful for snorkelling.
