Silversea launches Antarctica Photography Academy

Travel is full of unique, eye-opening, horizon-expanding experiences that are, by their very nature, transitory. In days past, explorers documented their voyages in detailed diaries and now we use photographs to memorialise our travel, magically bestowing permanency on the impermanent, freezing a moment for posterity. The more extraordinary the experience, the harder it is to capture in still life, which is where Silversea’s new Photography Academy comes in.

Gone are the days where friends and family were forced to sit through dull slideshows of holiday snaps. The time has passed for developing your disposable film only to find the flash never went off or every shot was over-exposed. No more having to sift through the stack of pictures to find just one  where your face hasn’t been blocked out by a thumb over the lens.

In today’s world there is a seemingly insatiable thirst for travel photography of a higher quality, we all want to see and take inspirational pictures of sensational destinations. The product of this desire is that images are shared constantly on social media sites like Facebook and Instagram, but surely documenting a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Antarctica deserves a little more ceremony than sharing what you had for tea on a Friday night?

Silversea has come up with the perfect solution to this question with the launch of their Photography Academy on expedition cruises to Antarctica on board Silver Cloud. Using the ship’s new Photo Studio and with expert guidance, guests will come away with far more than just another snap on their smart phone’s camera roll.

Silver Cloud’s Antarctica itineraries are designed to maximise expedition time, giving guests more time to shoot great images of the region’s mesmerising landscapes and stunning wildlife.

Unique to Silver Cloud, the Photo Studio features state-of-the-art software and equipment for editing photos. With both private and group lessons available, guests will learn how to take and edit photos like a professional in an array of specialty workshops provided by the Academy for beginners and pros alike. Guests will also have the opportunity to schedule a one-on-one appointment with an expert in digital photography to receive personal instruction on camera use, guidance on smart gear and more.

With high-quality printers available for use on a fee-basis, guests will be able to create their own post-cards or take home frame-ready pictures, including panorama and A2-size prints – a far more fitting souvenir for an extraordinary experience than another jpeg taking up space in the cloud.
