Quito & Galapagos Islands

Straddling the Equator, fascinating Ecuador is home to colonial cities, colourful handicraft markets, lush Amazon and cloud forest and the spectacular Avenue of Volcanoes.  The breathtaking and unspoilt Galapagos islands boast stunning wild landscapes and thriving wildlife. Embark on a cruise to discover their many natural treasures.

Quito is the first city to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historical old town and new town of Quito are full of character and attract many visitors each year. Quito’s old town is a maze of streets with colonial houses and baroque churches whilst the new town is a different world entirely - full of modern hotels, restaurants and bars.

Why not visit The Galapagos Islands? A national park and biological marine reserve. The island and water surroundings are home to famed species which were studied by Charles Darwin and used to provide his theory of evolution by natural selection.

Other attractions include; Monastery of San Francisco (Oldest Colonial building in Quito), Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World Monument), Market days, Quito zoo and Cotopaxi National park.

Ecuadorians have a relaxed attitude regarding punctuality and if you are invited to somebody’s home you should never arrive on time – 30-45 minutes late is acceptable.

The distinctive Panama hat is in fact an Ecuadorean export. In the mid 19th Century, traders from Ecuador travelled to the thriving Isthmus of Panama to sell their hand-woven, brimmed straw hats. Thus people believed that they were of Panamanian origin. This misconception was further fuelled by photos of President Roosevelt famously wearing a Panama hat during the construction of the Panama Canal.

Yes, the staterooms are beautifully finished, the entertainment is spectacular and there is food to die for, but it was the brilliant design of Celebrity Edge’s public spaces that really took my breath away.
