When you’re putting together your dream tailor-made itinerary, there are several things that you need to bear in mind. Here’s our list of the most important things to think about before you start:
How much do you want to spend on your holiday? It sounds obvious but it is worth calculating the total amount that you are willing to spend. Then deduct what you are likely to spend on daily expenses such as meals, treats and souvenirs plus a little extra contingency money. What’s left is your travel budget.
Health and Fitness
Think carefully about the health and fitness levels of all the members of your party before creating your itinerary. If you are travelling with people with breathing problems for example, then it might be best to avoid high altitudes or the pollution of big cities. If you’re considering a walking tour, be careful to choose one that is not too strenuous.
We can check which vaccinations you need for all the countries you are visiting well in advance of travel. Some vaccinations are given in more than one dose so will require several visits to your clinic, others must be given time to be truly effective. This can range from ten days to three months before travel. If you are travelling to several different countries, it is also worth researching whether or not you will need a Yellow Fever Certificate to enter some of them.
If you are travelling to a Malaria zone, you will need to organise anti-malarial drugs well in advance of travel. Many of these require you to start taking them three weeks before you go away.
We can advise when is the best time of year to visit your chosen destination. Does it have a major weather event once a year like the Caribbean’s hurricane season or India’s monsoon? If so we’ll tell you when it’s best to avoid travelling there. If you wilt in the heat, it’s best to avoid travelling to Kenya in February and March, if you can’t stand the cold then think we can help with advice on suitable clothing for a trip to see the Northern Lights in the Finnish winter.
Length of Stay
How long do you want to spend in each place? Think carefully about the type of place it is and how this suits you. For example if you need entertainment and a variety of activities, then you might want to spend longer in the big cities on your list and keep the beach stay down to a few days. Make sure you have enough time in each place to really savour all the things on your must-see list and think about cutting back on the number of places you visit if you have limited time. The last thing you want on a dream holiday is to feel like you’ve spent most of it in airports!
Must See and Must Do
This is the fun bit. Gather up your maps and guidebooks and make your list of places you absolutely HAVE to see and things you really want to do. Include places that you might think are out of the way, or fabulous experiences that may seem hard to arrange. Our consultants may well see a way to include them in your itinerary. Swimming with dolphins, visiting a remote Aztec city in the jungle, this is your chance to dream.
This goes hand in hand with your must-see list. Tell us what you loathe. Perhaps you want to avoid the crowds, the heat or spicy food? Perhaps you prefer the anonymity of large hotels or want to stay somewhere that doesn’t allow children, pets or smoking in rooms. We’ll help you to arrange the right places for you and avoid the wrong ones!
